The Church

The Church of the Castle, belonging to the old Benedictine Abbey, underwent several transformations during the 18th century which were aimed at reducing its dimensions thus leading to the creation of new rooms such as Sala San Gorgone.

A Holy Mass to honour San Gorgone is still celebrated nowadays in the church on the occasion of the Saint’s Day on September 9th: the Saint has always been very dear to Tuscan peasants and is cited in many Tuscan proverbs (“Se fa bello per San Gorgone, la vendemmia va benone”, which translates “Good weather on San Gorgone’s day will lead to a good vintage season”).
